Our relationship was a strained one at best growing up. My brother always got what he wanted and was hardly ever punished. I always felt like he was the "Favorite" one. I was always getting into trouble. I always had a curfew when he could come and go as he pleased. I was always told this was because I was the girl and that I was more fragile. It always made me mad to hear that I never thought it was fair. We were taught that school was our job and chores were mandatory. Now, I don't hate my parents at all but man I sure did back then sometimes.
Me and my brother fought all the time, he would beat me up, and I think just to be doing it at times. We never agreed on anything. We never had the same friends and his usually made fun of me. It stayed like this until August of 1998. Why do I remember that date so well you might ask? Well, that was the year I almost lost my brother. My fianc at the time had just got his pilot license and he asked us to go for a ride with him. I had been up once or twice before and loved it. I couldn't go this time however because I was babysitting for my cousin. My brother agreed to go and was really looking forward to it. I remember looking up in the sky and waving at them as they flew over. I remember as soon as they got out of sight though I had this horrible feeling sink into the pit of my stomach. I just knew something was going to go wrong and there was nothing I could do about it. I just shrugged it off and went back to babysitting.
A few hours later I received a phone call. It's the phone call no one wants believe me. It was my cousin Becky. She told me to sit down. That is all I can remember about the phone call. I can remember being in a vehicle and driving down my grandpa's driveway going somewhere but the rest is fuzzy. The plane had crashed. It was a little Cessna. All I was told was they went around a bend or a corner and never saw the high wire lines and hit them and went down into a swamp. My brother got out a window somehow and swam to the bank and called and searched for my fianc. When he didn't see or hear anything he walked God knows how many miles for help. He busted his knee and forehead up and was bleeding pretty bad but that was the worse of his physical injuries.
I remember going into his hospital room and seeing him laying there in that bed and thinking my brother was dead. My brother wasn't dying of course and he is doing fine now but they never found my fianc that I was told anyway. I think they kept a lot of information from me. I was told he went down fighting the plane to keep it in the air. I don't know if that is true or not.
Needless to say I blamed myself for this. If I had went my brother wouldn't have and he would be safe from harm. But then it would have been me in his position and I probably wouldn't have made it out alive.
That is the day that our relationship changed for the better. That horrific accident brought us closer together. We never fought, never made fun of each other and actually had a good time together. It's so sad that it took something like that to turn us around but it did and sometimes even through the pain of losing my fianc and almost losing my brother I'm a little bit thankful it happened.
