How to save money on food

Created on: August 03, 2008

Your choice of where you buy your food will be your first major decision when considering strategies on how to save money on food.It is likely that you buy your food from a number of different places but is your regular, biggest shop from the best value supermarket? In England it has become noticeable that a number of the cheaper supermarkets are flourishing in the credit crunch because they are supplying good quality food at lower prices. It is important to adopt a positive attitude if you are changing from a supermarket that is considered the supplier of higher quality food as it is quite likely not the case.

A change of supermarket is not the only answer, especially if you already shop at one of the cheaper ones. One handy technicque to try out is not to shop when you are hungry. If you do you are more like to buy a whole selection of meals or food items that you do not need but just fancied at the time due to that naughty hunger pang. Shopping on a full stomach, apart from providing you with the necessary energy to complete this dull task, will focus your mind more on what you need rather endless extravagances.

Wastage of food has now been identified by the Government as one of the main contributory factors to cause people to overspend on food. To limit food wastage, look at sell by and use by dates on the packaging and decide whether you are going to be using the foods within or close to the guidelines.Fresher foods such as salad or fruit tend to be at their best for only a short time, so in keeping with a committment to healthy food as well it may be advisable to buy less of those items, but more regularly so that they are not thrown away, having gone off. Another measure to employ to avoid wastage of food and subsequently overspending is to think twice as to whether you really are going to use all those items that are on offer at 2 for the price of 1 or buy 10 get 1 free. The initial attraction of saving money may attract you, but the danger of buying something you are going to throw away may well make the purchase more expensive than buying the item individually, with a definite committment to eating it.

Supermarkets are in the business of making money and profits. it is vital therfore that if you are serious about saving money on food that you play them at their own game. The shelves are not stacked randomly. More expensive items will be placed at eye level and less expensive ones lower down.Make sure you look down too! Make a list of all the regular items
