How dial-up acceleration works

Dial-up acceleration are done by dial-up accelerators, software applications which improve dial-up Internet connections and make them load faster by decreasing the page download time.

Most of these dial-up acceleration software or accelerators claim to be able to check your system and connection type to see which configuration suits you, while making sure everything is optimized to increase your connection speed.

However, how do they really work?

Most of the services rendered by these dial-up accelerators can be done by you.

Maximum Port Speed

When dial-up connection is established, the Modem takes up the default port speed, either 56Kbps or 115.2Kbps, hence the speed is slow. However, most new Modems can adjust to a speed higher than the default selected speed which can be done via the Modem Settings or Properties from the Control Panel or Dial-Up Internet Connection Application.

This is one thing dial-up accelerators do. They ensure the maximum speed in the Maximum Port Speed of the Modem Settings is selected. Sometimes it can be a speed of 921.6Kbps or even more.

File Compression

Also in the settings of the Modem from the Control Panel or Dial-Up Internet Connection, the option to select Hardware Flow Control, Modem Compression, Modem Flow Control, etc. is allowed.

Selecting these options increase the speed as files are compressed and error is controlled, while ensuring same files are not reloaded from same source but stored in a cache or "memory" where they are quickly loaded onto the page for display.

These dial-up accelerators also ensure all these are done.

Third Party / Remote Server

Some dial-up accelerators store some of the most visited and popular websites on a different server. Also, some "secretly" check the websites you visit often, probably through History in your browser, open them up and store them in a different server where they can be downloaded quickly and be displayed on your computer.

However, a good number of them use your cache, cookie or "memory" to store up some files of your previously visited websites in your computer, so that the next time you visit the site, your computer will load it quickly with little assistance from the Internet connection; maybe only a new information will be needed from the Internet connection.

Doing this makes everything flow like silk and there is an improved speed.

All of this helps to make your browsing and downloading faster than before. Except this third one which has to do with storing up pages somewhere, others can be done by you.
