Poetry: Fairies

by Ennette Aitken

Fairies

As I lay down on the hills one night
Amongst the purple heather
Starring at the stars above
Shimmering as they glitter

Polka dots of diamonds
Mid the blackness of the sky
Tranquil moon on pedestal
Like porcelain in the sky

Woken from my dream like state
Noise surrounded me
Strangely yet familiar sound
Swirling about me

A lullaby of long ago
Sung over the years
Angelic voices
Languish in my ears

All at once I saw a glow
Illuminating from below
An emerald promenade appears
Never seen this through my years

Imagination running wild
Do I run, do I hide
Do I run to see
The voices that were calling me

Did my head believe
What my eyes had seen
Fairies masquerading
Right in front of me

Pointed ears and silly beards
Wings with silver lining
Singing songs of long ago
Faces all a glow

In awesome wonder as I watched
Fairies on display
Mesmerised, hypnotised, enchanting
Fairies they were dancing

All to soon the sun was rising
Peeking head above horizon
Darkness fades to shades of grey
Turning night time into day

Is it yes, or is it no
Were they real?
Please tell me so
Maybe I will never know

With each glow I see at night
Is it fairy party night?
(wink)
