of attracting big names.
Nevertheless, this season promises to be one very much of transition and probable improvement. Eleventh really will not be too difficult to improve upon, but of course cup success provides both optimism and higher expectations. The squad is completely different to the one that finished fifth twice-the transformation shows that failure to break into the top places is no longer acceptable. Huerelho Gomes came for an initial 7million, which could rise significantly, who comes with a reputation among PSV fans for being one of the best keepers in the world. Along the backline we have Gunter and Hutton competing for right-back, replacing the selfish and sulky Chimbonda. Dawson, Woodgate and King look very impressive at centre-back, supposing they can stay relatively free from injury, but one more centre back is expected. Gilberto(?) still has a question mark after his name, but this could be a great season for Bale. The midfield could have an interesting look to it this season, with Ramos supposedly wanting to move to a 4-2-3-1. Huddlestone, the lazy gentle giant, and Zokora, he with the empty look in his eyes, should make up that two. Three can be permed from Bentley, Lennon, Jenas, Modric and Dos Santos, looking very strong, leaving just Bent up front if and when Berbatov goes and before a replacement arrives. That team is, man for man, the strongest outside the top four bar none.
It really rests with Ramos. Jol was never able to get the best out of the players at his disposal. Jenas, Defoe, Zokora, Huddlestone and Robinson particularly underachieved-Berbatov too, if you consider his vast ability. It often seemed that there was tension between Berbatov and Jol was affecting performances. Martin was an enormous, tough, bubbly and optimistic Bloke who didn't seem to understand when to put his arm around a player and when to kick them up the backside. The only man who didnt really need either, Keano, has left. Forget the significance of systems, Ramos' greatest test will be maintaining confidence and a happy atmosphere. If we can achieve that we really ought to get fifth place.
