Why are there so many singles out there? In 2006, single Canadians outnumbered married Canadians for the first time. In 2007, 42% of Americans 18 and older were single. Part of the increase can be attributed to the fact that North Americans are marrying later in life, and part of it could be an inability to successfully navigate a first date.
The first date is the most critical. Singles check each other out, probe for common interests, and see if... well, if they're interested. First dates don't have to be a trial or a horror show, though. Learn what to avoid in the following list of first date blunders and mistakes that are guaranteed to turn a potential hottie into a "heck no!"
1. You Stink.
Laugh if you want to, but the number one date mistake is showing up with poor hygiene. It is not acceptable to run a comb through your hair, straighten your tee-shirt, and head out the door. Guys, make sure you've showered that day, apply some deodorant, shave, straighten your hair, and at the very least put on a collared shirt. Girls? The same goes for you. Clean hair and skin is a must, and tinted lip-gloss and mascara are the bare minimum for make-up to wear to show that you've put a little effort into your date. It might seem Stone Age, but men do prefer women in skirts, and it never hurts to wear something that flatters your shape instead of hiding it in miles of sweatshirt.
2. The Basics.
Make sure you're looking good before heading out the door - and don't be late. Mind your manners at the dinner table, and if you're at a bar, don't get drunk. Be sure to treat waiters with respect, leave a tip, and make sure that your date has a way to get home. First dates are all about first impressions, so make sure that you're looking and acting like a decent member of the human race.
3. What Did I Say?!
According to It's Just Lunch, a Vancouver dating network, the top four conversation killers are past relationships, dieting or body image, politics, and marriage. That being said, it's not impossible to have a meaningful conversation on a date. Ask about past vacations and dream vacations, favourite books and movies, corniest pick-up lines, current events, reality TV, hobbies, most embarrassing moments, best childhood Halloween costume, and what they're passionate about. Just remember to keep it light.
4. Money Makes the World Go 'Round.
So much for the feminist movement - on first dates, most women expect the man to foot the bill, and many men would be affronted if their date insisted
