Travel Planning & Advice

Ways to travel cheap or free

Try camping for a good way to save money. I often fly to a destination, such as Oregon, rent a car and bring a huge suitcase packed with all my camping necessities. I may bring a tent or make use of rental cabins/yurts available at local parks. This can save a bundle as camping may run less than $30/night where local hotels are over $75/night. On a one week trip, the savings add up fast. Check mini-van rates if you will be in bear country, as during spring or fall, you may be more comfortable with an air mattress in the back of the van. Remember to bring a tarp in case you have seats to remove. You want to be able to bring the car back in perfect condition.

Look into renting a house in the area where you will be visiting. A house may offer more amenities than a hotel and allow you to cook your own meals.

If you can land a job that includes travel, you may be able to accumulate points at hotel chains and airline miles. This method can afford many free or very low cost trips.

Utilizing discount airlines also works well. Check out web sites that specialize in discount cruises, or resort stays. Enroll in all the travel clubs offered by hotel chains, airlines and rental car companies so you can accumulate the points/miles mentioned above. Even if you are traveling on your own dollar, if you travel often enough, you may rack up enough points for a few freebies. Also sign up to receive newsletters and e-mail promotions from these clubs. This will give you early notice of sales or special offers.

Travel during non-peak times and be flexible with your schedule to get the best rates. Remember to check for discounts such as AAA, AARP. Flying on certain days of the week, such as Tuesday or Thursday, may save you a lot on airfare.

One strategy that might help cut costs, is to only eat breakfast and dinner. If you have a big, late morning breakfast and then an early dinner, you may find you don't miss lunch and this can save $5 to $15/day. Choosing a hotel chain that provides a free breakfast or dinner can also save money.

Happy Travels!
