Is peace on Earth realistically attainable?

What the World needs Now
- an essay for peace

The title of my essay for peace is reminiscent of a line from a Beetles' song in which the answer to the rhetorical question is love, love, love'. Of course this is just as true today as it was then, indeed as it has always been. Unfortunately few have heeded the words as they have also failed to heed the words of Jesus Christ when he encouraged people to love one another. In fact it was this particular trait which was to identify Christians as distinct from those in the world who either love superficially, conditionally, or even hate one another. There are many other great faiths and religions which also encourage us to love one another and they too appear to have been just as unsuccessful judging from the current state of the world. Why is it so difficult to respond to a call to love one another when the world is so desperately in need of peace and reconciliation? There are possibly many different answers to this question often seen from widely differing perspectives and each worthy of our attention. The writer's intention is to encourage an answer which people's of different nationalities, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, faiths old and new may seriously consider for adoption.

Many Christians believe that the way to peace is to have everyone convert to Christianity as seen from their particular religious perspective. Many Islamists hold a similar viewpoint and some Jews seek to separate themselves from others. Although I am a Christian myself, I believe this to be a flawed strategy for bringing peace to the world and that it will only bring about even deeper divides than already exist. That is not to say that Christians, Muslims and Jews along with many other faiths, religions and traditions, don't have something important to say to the world, because they do and it could profit the world to listen. When and if we ever know all truth, it may become evident that there is only one true religion' and those who hold to this point of view should not be shaken from their faith by what I have written. But firstly a word for the professing atheist or agnostic as I don't wish them to feel left out or to turn away in their condemnation of all that is religious'. I hold it to be self evident that each of us has been given free will to choose own pathway in life and therefore when we stumble along in moments of darkness should we not welcome a little light rather than close our eyes.

What the world needs now is to understand
