These efficiency ratings are manufacturer list numbers and will more than likely be lower than the actual return. These manufacturer numbers mirror the mileage ratings of the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA's numbers are received through tests that take "typical" driving style, driving area, vehicle condition and maintenance, fuel, vehicle style and engine break-in into consideration. Also keep in mind that the numbers below are the vehicles in their standard form and will change varied upon transmission, engine, and drive systems. They are listed in order of average ("combined") fuel mileage because it is not fair to list them by their highest number. Some will surpass it, but some will not even reach it. By doing it this way you get a truer reading which is lower if inaccurate, not higher. Ties in efficiency were broken first by engine size, then GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), and finally payload rating.
-Full-Size Trucks-
#1: GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado 1500
MSRP: $18,425/$18,515
Standard features: 4.3L V6, Manual
Fuel Efficiency: 15 [City]/20 [Highway]/17.5 [Combined]
I myself am very impressed with GM's effort on their new half-ton. I drive a 2008 Silverado 1500 WT, which is as standard as a truck gets with the exception of the automatic transmission, and I absolutely love it. It's a company vehicle for my father's plumbing business that does all it's supposed to and more. When I calculated the combined mpg off GM's specifications I was fairly surprised. I say this because I very rarely drive on the highway and am getting 21 mpg consistently. A durable, strong, beautiful and comfortable truck that even in its barest of features leaves you with plenty of options to make your ride enjoyable. Out of the many cars and trucks I have driven in the past, this is one of the most outstanding and smoothest riding vehicles of all which is quite an impressive feat for a truck. The GMC Sierra is very similar holding the same basic components. The biggest difference is its simpler body style which many potential buyers find more aesthetic than the Silverado's more complex appearance. Both models have the best V6 and V8 fuel efficiency of any full-size pickup.
#2: Dodge Ram 1500
MSRP: $23,050
Standard features: 3.7L V6, Manual
Fuel Efficiency: 15/20/17.5
The 2008 Dodge Ram is a nice "well-rounded truck" (Edmunds.com) with plenty of power, comfortability and handling. Since the mid 1990's the Dodge Ram has been the "style-hog", sometimes earning most of their sales
