Poetry: Autumn

by Donna Carroll Batton

The Autumn

Today I saw a robin starting
for the land of sun
I saw a gray squirrel storing food
as if there'd soon be none

I smelled the crispness of the air
and felt a tiny chill
And, save for toddler's quiet play
the street seemed oddly still

And then my eyes beheld the sight
most beautiful of all
For as I stared, I understood
the beauty of the fall

As all around me fell a show'r
of crimson, rust and gold
To weave a fine and dazzling quilt
in beauty bright and bold

I love the winter, white with snow
the trees all silver sprayed
I love the fresh, new springtime, with
the flowers all arrayed

I love the summer, bright and warm
excitement in the air
Blue lakes and white sand beaches
lilts of laughter everywhere

But autumn is a masterpiece
in multicolored hue
Painted by the Master, and
enjoyed by me and you
