Do not listen to anybody who says one is better than the other. Actually, you can listen to them if you want to hear something opinionated or based on selective fact. However, if you are looking for a non-biased comparison, I'll give one now.
Whether the PS3 or the Wii is right for you depends on what you want. Sony and Nintendo are very different in their goals and methods this generation.
PS3
The PS3 is a technological feat of brilliance from a hardware standpoint. This monster of graphics, physics, and sheer processing power is far from reaching it's potential. The games will only get better with time, trust me. This is brand new technology, developers are inexperienced with it but the potential is there so don't worry about visuals, they will be stunning. Not to mention its format of choice, Blu-ray, is capable of storing huge amounts of data which means longer or more detailed games than we have seen from previous generation consoles.
The PS3 controller has six axis motion detection, suitable for driving games, flying games, or whatever else game developers come up with. Physically, it is similar to the PS2's DualShock controller.
If you want a console that integrates well into your home computer network then the PS3 is suitable. The operating system, Linux, can be installed onto it's hard drive, and numerous online facilities are accessible (including downloading games or media).
You can play PS2 games on the PS3, which gives you access to one of the best libraries of games any console has ever seen. It can read DVDs and, more importantly (who doesn't have a few DVD players already?), Blu-ray discs, which could be the successor to the DVD format.
Wii
The Wii is great. There hasn't been one single person who has come to my place, played it, and not asked "so what is this thing called again? Where do you get them from? How much do they cost?" Whether they were five years old or fifty years old, the reaction has been consistent.
Graphically, it is nothing compared to the PS3. Though I think it would be safe to say it is more powerful than an Xbox(not an Xbox360). This does not mean the graphics aren't pleasing. Some games look amazing, visually, such as Zelda: Twilight Princess, which was originally designed for the Gamecube but still holds its own in the new generation.
Nintendo was aiming to appeal to a wider audience than just hardcore or casual gamers with the Wii, and decided to focus on making it intuitive and easy to use. The Wii is designed around
