Best international destinations for the US dollar

Money makes the world go round and this is clear in the current economic climate when people see the exchange rates against the dollar; they are put off travelling and this has a knock-on effect that reaches all the way around the world.

It's not, however, all doom and gloom. There are always options for the enterprising American who wants to travel.

The key is to choose a destination whose economy, currency and general fortune is somewhat dependent or tied up in the dollar. Areas such as the Carribean, Eastern Europe or Asia are definitely worth travelling to and it doesn't have to break the bank!

Most importantly, do some research before you go. There are plenty of tour companies based in America who organise trips abroad. Booking through these companies rather than online, or independently when you arrive can save you money because you are paying up-front and in dollars. Often, items included in these 'all-inclusive' prices such as entry to exhibitions and meals can take its toll on you; while the savings made from pre-booking can be significant.

Some particularly good places to visit in order to make the most of your dollars are:

Eastern Europe
This is an area which is strongly linked with the American economy and, as such, is relatively reasonable for visitors. The countries of Eastern Europe are steeped in history and culture and, of course, the people are incredibly friendly. Tourism is important in the countries of Eastern Europe so visitors are warmly welcomed. Highlights could be Prague, in the Czech Republic; Zagreb, in Croatia and Riga, in Latvia

South America
Mexico, in particular, is a great place to visit at the moment. Although restrictions have been placed on American visitors, meaning they must produce their passport at border control, the weak Peso is ripe to be taken advantage of by tourists. Mexico City a must-see while the outlying, regional areas offer something more of the history and culture Mexicans are so proud of. Other countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Peru offer a wealth of tourism opportunities and their currencies are making them viable options for Americans to visit.

The Bahamas
Officially not part of the Caribbean, the Bahamas shares so many of the characteristics of the area that if you can't get to one, you can always try the other. The currency here, the dollar, shares many close ties with the U.S. Dollar and even in some areas U.S. Dollars are accepted. Because of the close links, the saving to be made by travelling to this area of the world are impressive. Again, pre-booking your stay can save money as most things, even meals and drinks, can be included in the price.
