Poetry: Rats

A introduction;
I heard, that when a dead rat is found by fellow rats, they take a nibble to build an immunity to poisons we lay in traps. Hence why their urine is poisonous to us.....Do not quote me...

My poem about Rats....

Building small communities, they live
in dwellings, frightened by predators
in many guises, some seen others not.
I figure as mankind, they seek immortality.

We had a visit from a family of Rats some time ago
they hunted dried fallen crumbs and nuts. Some even
clawed their way up my bird table to gather pickings.

When my wife offered me a slender brown box, I asked,
"Are you sure this Air rifle, is my only option"?

I was practicing at some targets waiting for pesky Rats,
when it occurred to me, that if Rats eat any of the Rats I
happen to shoot with my eyes closed, I could be facing a
generation of bullet proof rats, did I play into their hands?

Rats!
