Using video on a website is a personal choice. There are many factors which you might take into consideration before using video on your website.
First of all, what is the purpose of your website? If your website is a business website video may or many not be the best choice as a component to your site. Would the video help or hurt your site. In some cases, perhaps the business you do involves demonstrations or explanations that might be easier to provide on your site as video alongside the written explanation. In this case, video might be just right for you. If your business involves video or photography in some way, adding video to the site might be the perfect addition. If you just want to add video because you like the idea, then you might want to take into consideration if video will inhibit certain viewers who might not be able to access your page or the video and then stop them from being able to read your site and utilize your services. Another problem with adding video just because you like is that the video might clutter up your website, making it more difficult to navigate. For a business website, this might be a bad idea.
If your website is a personal website you may just want to add video because you want to share a video with your friends and other viewers. In this case, you can definitely benefit from the use of video. Again, you do run the risk of cluttering up your website with video if you just include it haphazardly. This keeps viewers from being able to visit your site or makes it difficult for them to navigate it.
One thing to consider as well is whether or not you have the bandwidth and knowledge of the technology to put video up on your website. We're not all tech savvy and some of us might find adding video to a page to be quite difficult. So if you are unfamiliar with coding and the various software and technologies out there that might be needed in order to add video to your website, you might want to refrain from trying to add video until you have a better understanding. Then again, if it is your personal website, you can use it as an opportunity to learn such technology!
In the end, adding video to your website is a personal choice. It can be used for any number of purposes and can enhance a website greatly when used properly and placed efficiently. The utilization of video technologies is one of the great options we have in this information age to enhance our websites and increase appeal to our users!
