With Saddam haing alread been killed, a more relevant question would be; Should Saddam Hussein have been killed?
I cannot see how this will cause anything but yet more problems.Without going into whether he deserved it or not and whether the West is responsible or not, the fact remains that this was, like everything else these days, turned into a media event -effectively a public execution.
Saddam certainly had to be held responsible for the crimes he had committed. However, death sentence should have been avoided. First of all, the region of the Middle East is locked in a circle of violence and death. Avoiding death sentence would have been a start to a new way of executing justice in the region. It might have helped to break away from the tradition of revenge by death. Secondly, just like the war itself, the execution did not solve anything. Yes, now he is dead, and?
The death of Saddam will only provoke more riots and civil war in Iraq, which in turn will see the deaths of thousands more American and British soldiers. Who will hang for their deaths - President Bush?
Videos of the execution have sparked great controversy but what is worse? The uncensored footage showing the heckling and cat calling, or the US, UK and Iraqi governments conveniently cleaned up video? How many more lies are going to be spread by these governments in order to justify a war that has no merit.
Saddam Hussain's execution will result in a further polarisation of the Sunni population. They're going to feel backed into a corner and under the boot of oppression. The taunting and humiliation by his enemies during the execution will further evidence the oppression and the absence of a national unity mandate. Historically people in such situations seek allies, any allies and fight. They fight because they feel they have no choice and nothing to loose. Pandora's box is open.
