We have all heard the phrase, "Choose your battles wisely". It seems that this phrase was specifically written to help those raising a teenager. This age is not only difficult for the child, but also for the parent. The child is attempting to discover who he is, what the world is all about, and what the future holds for him. Parents are battling with the idea of letting go and allowing the teen to explore the world around him.

By choosing what is most important to you, and disciplining accordingly, you can feel confident that your actions are appropriate. If you discipline too much, you run the risk of alienating your teen and possibly causing more rebellious behavior. Choosing not to discipline and giving the teen too much freedom may, believe it or not, cause the child to feel you don't care enough to set limitations. Make a list of what is most important to you. Your list should be specific and include things like grades, respect for others (including parents!), responsibility, and honesty. Your list is done and the battle lines have been clearly drawn. Discipline can now be done according to the values and principles you want your child to learn.
