Love of a Friend

A shaggy, mangy mutt as her only companion
A starved, elderly woman sat all alone

As famished as she was she knew
Her furry friend was hungry too

"My cupboards are bare" she would say
I have nothing to offer but a place to stay
Her friend did not mind for she was being kind
So the mutt cuddled next to her for warmth to find

As the morning approached the elderly woman awoke
Amazed was she to find her friend still lying there
I must search for food to eat
cause my friend is getting extremely weak

She reached the kitchen with turtle like steps
One cupboard, two cupboard, three cupboards bare
\four cupboard, five cupboard, six
Wait, what is this?
In her frailed, wrinkled hand she held
A mouse eaten piece of bread

"Look, what I found," she said to her friend
With tears in her eyes and a glee in her voice
Without thinking twice she made her choice
With an outstretched arm and a shaky hand
Gave her furry friend the treasure she found

A shaggy, mangy mutt as her only companion
Sat all alone
For the elderly woman was no more
