Poetry: Remembering

Angelus

When it starts I know it well.
The wistful tolling of the bell;
Out from the heart and into ears.
Across the labyrinth of the years;
Out from skies where shadows fell
On the longing of the bell.

When first I heard the languid toll
One summer's eve so long ago;
There was no reason then to fear
The dead of night and lonely tear.
For only peace and faith may dwell
Within the clamor of the bell.

When comes the day of my defeat,
And all life's labors are complete.
When evening draws me ever near
That distant knell I hope to hear.
Then I will bid a fond farewell
Into the twilight of the bell.
