Book reviews: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, by Haruki Murakami

heard the hand of fate winding the spring because his father was going to die and he was going to loose his voice. You see the pattern here? It's like a signal of doom from fate.

Another theory of mine: I think Toru impregnated Creta Kano. I think the dream he had about her with a baby named "Corsica" is real on some level, just like the dreams he had about sleeping with her in the hotel room.

I think I've pretty much managed to explain everything I could in my own little way. As for all the other questions I didn't answer, those are the ones that you're supposed to "use your own imagination" to figure out. Who was the whistling waiter? You decide. What happened to Mackerel to make him disappear for a year? You decide. Who was the faceless man? Why did the man with the guitar case attack Toru with the bat? Where did the mark come from and why did it go away? YOU decide!

Despite what Boris says in the novel, it's not such a bad thing, using your imagination. And as for the complaints about there being too many chapters that needed to be edited, I have to say I heartily disagree. Granted, a lot of the chapters didn't "seem" to really move the story forward but if you take any of my theories into account, they actually contributed to the story's characters a lot. And even if they didn't, I still found them to be pretty good and entertaining stories, which is all a novel is supposed to be: a story that entertains. If you aren't satisfied enough with just that, what was it exactly that you expected?

Like I said in my opening statement, I am not a Murakami fanatic. This is the only book by the author that I have read, so my opinions and conclusions are unbiased and rational to me, not the endless rantings of a devoted fan who will read any book by him even if it's crap. I just enjoy reading and I enjoyed this novel very much.

Who knows? I might even find some more books by this author and dive in.
