Blind vs. discerning patriotism

by Michael Zaphah

The Rustling of leaves last winter was one of the things helping me to remembered most of all what I wanted to forget. I was unemployed homeless and a disabled veteran. As I walking through the park at Wingfield Park last winter, I had decided to warm myself by walking over three miles to the Sierra Medical Veterans Hospital early that cold morning to begin my day.

As I was walking into the hospital, I started watching the news channel. I began thinking about how bad the economy was getting with gas price up, global warming, and the wars and rumor of wars I saw in that small minute.
I spend six years in the United States Marines Corps, and I now wonder what was I protecting as far as the America I was raised in as a child; it wasn't this countries ignored Constitution nor of independence. Because even now these divinely inspired document that I swore to protect are becoming mere wallpaper hangings for the reason that of our present leadership wishes to re-write new law to abolish our right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
After I left the military, I had become a roaming gypsy going from town to town unnoticed. I felt that we the people of the United States of the America had became spoiled brats as I watched each family, city, and town practically doing the same thing by celebrating the 4th of July; much like every other red-blooded American. The towns and cities of the America haven't really changed seen the eighteenth century (well okay we have the internet and computers), and things aren't the same as I use too see them as child when I grew up in the sixties and seventies.
The cook-outs in the park with the home made ice cream, the fire-works, and parades. I had been all over America remembering how each stated celebrated the four of July. The cold feeling of being told to leave the town, or face jail time for trespassing even while carrying a walking stick as lethal weapon. As I see the police of many urban, towns and cities violate other homeless veterans and minority men and women's rights. I went back to why I served, and the futility I was seeing my time in the service.
Seeing Democrats and Republican saying that they are controlling the hearts and minds of we the people. When they only search for ways to fill their pockets with corporate funding of another Vietnam re-run. The government is not getting smaller, but it's very much resembles the movie epic Star Wars as our country is just a hair trigger from being a police state. The government
