This is a Personal Choice!
The person has many reason to take the "easy path" for many different Personal Reasons. When the conditions here on this plane are just beyond endurance, then the person may decide to call an end to it. The Decision is often comes down to "i have had enough and need no more".
The Individual is no longer considered in the scheme of things! It just the way our environment has changed to become a group mind set and the Heroes are no longer of any significance. The Nobel Prizes have often been split between persons and countries. What the hell good is that!
You mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! You control, and contribute nothing to ANYTHING. YOU do not deserve any respect; everything is for the Cause or Country. The group maters not the individual within that group.
A simple idea of life insurance is interesting in that WHEN the clause against suicide is removed let's see the effect. The Population will diminish! We may even obtain a zero population growth. The grieving widow, or widower, will get a big sum of money. That becomes the new wealth. Taxes do NOT apply to Insurance Checks.
The Group will continue and the Cause will continue.
With the way Society is going, what with endless war and poverty, there can be NO Individuals. A Motzart would be in a mental home having his brains fried. Any, free thinker would wind up in the same mental home as Motzart having their brains fried. No, you just cannot have Individuals! They might criticize the Cause. They may say blowing the planet into atomic ash is a bad thing and convince followers that this exist.
When the Individual is removed from the equation and the Free Thinkers are "neutralized", what remains but some "Hitler" or worse. What did Hitler do with the Free Thinkers? What did Stalin in the Great Purge? What did the Emperors of China and the Near East do with these?
In feudal Japan the Emperor or Shogun could COMMAND an Individual to commit suicide.
So, when the Individual finds that they cannot fit in and cannot live without THEIR OWN DREAM, the person will make the Decision. If the ones left behind are taken care of with mere money and the Individual sees no Respect or cannot even find their own self worth, then the choice is reasonably easy.
When the a person is faced with a terminal illness and KNOWS there is no solution for them, then this may be the best way for all concerned. When the pain becomes way to much then ...
Society as a whole does not give a damn! Their only concern is that others
