What to consider when selling your used car

From 1984 to 1990, I have bought and sold used cars, at most, 2 cars on a given time. It was not a business. I just had a passion for cars and wanted to try a brand or model I can afford. Having been in several automotive dealerships in the first years of my working life, I never wanted to buy a brand new one, even when we could afford it then. That's the reason why I was into selling cars I used in 3, 6, or 12 month intervals.

It is in the automotive dealership industry where I learned the good and bad sides of some brands and models of cars.

In selling a used car, there is question I always ask myself before I put it up for sale. And it is, "Would I buy that car for the same price I am selling it for?" In most, if not all cases that I bought a used car, I do it myself to put it in top condition and road worthiness. My passion for cars had me operate an auto repair shop for more than 5 years.

Here are what I consider in selling used cars, and even buying one for that matter:
Is the price right, given that there may be some minor repairs or part replacements needed? Like tires, battery, seats, seat cover, etc.
Is there enough parts available and where? Buyers often ask about it.
How reliable is the car? Had it ever gotten me in trouble in a place where it is difficult to get help or assistance? A good number of buyers appreciate a car that is "good" to the owner.
Prepare for questions on how frequently some parts need to be replaced or repaired. Buyers want to know how much it will cost them to maintain the car.
History of the car is important for buyers, on what the car had gone through.
If documents are available, have it ready and volunteer to turn it over to the buyer in case the deal goes through. The importance of these papers is proof of ownership and the attention given to the car. Include parts and repair bills, this will give the buyer more information on repair and parts cost.
If the car had been in an accident or serious damage, inform the buyer in all honesty with the assurance that all has been settled and the car is well repaired.

Finally, if the car is really intended to be sold, it should be clean and presentable. Take note, though, there are buyers suspicious of a car that's too clean. Most of them imagine that there must be something being hidden making the car so clean especially in the engine area. Small traces of oil are normal. In checking the dipstick, make sure that engine has settled from running for about 30 minutes on level ground. Not taking note of this will give a false reading of engine oil level which could get the buyer to lose interest. Make sure that all instrument gauges and switches are functional. No one will buy to drive a car that has faulty lights, wiper or with a faulty fuel or temperature gauge.
