Singles are often times overlooked in the Church. We see excellent children and youth programs and curriculim geared towards educating children in Bible principles. The married adults often times have small group studies and marriage siminars that meet the needs of married couples. So what about the young single adults? What's out there for them when it comes to programs and is it a necessary ministry in the church?
Single adults are a vital part of the church body. What better place to meet others who are single than those who are a part of your home church or a part of a community church. In today's society, it is hard to find friends and other singles who enjoy the same things you do. It is even harder to find singles who share the same beliefs and faith as you do.
The church definitely needs a singles ministry. However, this should not be a ministry focused on promoting dating nor should it be turned into a match-making service. Rather, this ministry should be built upon Bible principles of living your life as a single person that God would be proud of. It should focus on building and preparing young singles for the relationships that await them. It is important that young singles in the church are being equipped with the knowledge of their roles in a relationship. The Bible gives clear guidelines for relationships and when they are followed, the relationships are sure to succeed.
Also, basic living skills should be incorperated as well. Money management, financial planning, savings, home buying and budgeting are key skills that many young singles lack today. Through the ministry, singles can be taught what God's views are towards debt, managing your finances, tithing and living as debt free as possible. Also, this would be a good opportunity for singles to begin planning where they want to be financially before deciding on marrying or entering a long term relationship. In a sense, they can be assisted into setting themselves into a position to succeed financially in their futures. This is greatly needed considering that money and finances is a large factor in divorce rates today.
This ministry can also help bridge the gap between the genders and singles can begin learning from each other. It's important to learn how to communicate with the opposite sex and to be able to understand the differences in how both relate and express their needs. By having a pressure free environment, singles can mingle with out the pressure and stress of trying to impress.
