The most important factors to a record enthusiast and collector are the grade of their vinyl records and keeping those recordings in the best condition possible. Vinyl records are susceptible to many types of damage and are at risk of losing monetary and emotional value any time that record is handled. Techniques utilized by collectors when caring for their vinyl records may seem extreme however many of the records in a private collection are irreplaceable and only the utmost care will prevent the recording from losing value. Proper handling and cleaning of vinyl records are important to learn before storing those memories away.
HANDLING
Always avoid touching the play area of a vinyl record. The record should be handled at the edges and using clean cotton gloves will help prevent any smudges and oils from the hands transferring to the record. Do not place the record on any surfaces accept a turntable and do not stack records on top of each other on the turntable.
CLEANING
Cleaning of vinyl records should be completed before and after each use. Acceptable methods of cleaning include a soft, cotton cloth with distilled water. Place some water on the cloth; wipe the record while turning it in a circular motion, in the groove direction. Avoid static build up which can create crackling during play and attracts dust. Anti-static cloths can be purchased but need to be kept stored away from air as they can dry up. If they do dry out, dispose of them and do not use them.
Serious collectors have invested in a machine called the Nitty-Gritty which can be purchased for approximately $250. The machine will clean both sides of the record at the same time and then it will vacuum off any leftover cleaning solution. Owners of the machine have noted that use of it on their vinyl records will even improve the sound quality of the recordings.
STORAGE
Proper storage of vinyl records is vital to the longevity and value of any record. Key elements to factor are the temperature, humidity, dust, stacking and pressure applied to the record. Recordings should be stored in a vertical position and never on their sides or stacked upon each other. Remove the original wrapping (if any) since the wrapping can shrink which causes the recording and cover to warp. The use of acid-free sleeves can be used to replace the wrapping.
The inner sleeves that cover the vinyl record should also be removed. These older sleeves contain acid and can also adhere to the vinyl. Plain acid-free sleeves should be used and cutting the corners on the sleeves will allow the record to be removed and replaced into the sleeve with ease.
Not always attainable are keeping the temperature and humidity at certain levels where records are stored. The temperature should remain between 65 and 70 degrees with a relative humidity level kept between 45 and 50 percent. Vinyl records should never be left in a vehicle where they can warp easily from the heat or kept in damp areas where mold can adhere to the albums and covers.
Keeping records in airtight containers or cabinets can control any dust issues that tend to accumulate in the environment. Avoid direct sunlight, smoking and areas where smoke and odors may disperse such as kitchens.
Collectors, no doubt can be meticulous about their vinyl records and those who share this passion can understand the pleasure that is gained from this fascinating hobby. Many collections have been built with a lot of time, energy and money invested. Only by protecting that collection will the emotional and monetary value be safeguarded for future enjoyment.
