Florence Henderson
Born in Dale, Indiana, Florence was one of ten children. After graduating from an academy in Kentucky, she headed for New York City. A veteran of musicals, movies, and television, Florence was the first woman to host Johnny Carson's Tonight Show in 1962. Her most widely-known role is that of Carol Brady from the Brady Bunch. She continues to work in a variety of different venues.
David Letterman
Late night host David Letterman, originally from Indianapolis, Indianapolis got his start doing weather, of all things, on television. His strange on-air behavior got him recognition, and lots of grief from his bosses. Moving from Indiana to L.A., he tried his hand at stand-up comedy, acting, and comedy writing. The right people took notice of his extremely dry wit, and he eventually landed a show behind Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. When he didn't get to take that show over, he bailed to CBS and took the time slot opposite the Tonight show.
Scatman Crothers
Not only a talented musician, Scatman Crothers was also a talented actor, vocalist, dancer and narrator. Having acted in eight films, including four of Jack Nicholson's, Scatman also enjoyed voiceover work on television. Other parts on television were varied, but most people remember him for his part in Chico and The Man.
Jane Pauley
Another Hoosier born newscaster, originally from Indianapolis, Jane graduated from the Indianapolis Public Schools, went to Indiana University, and proceeded to become a news anchor at one of the local Indianapolis stations, WISH-TV. After several years there, she went to WMAQ in Chicago, for a short period of time. After that, she joined network news at NBC. She joined the Today Show with Bryant Gumbel, and remained there until 1989. By 2004, she had disappeared from the public eye after having acknowledged her own personal battle with bi-polar disorder.
