Movie reviews: Mr. and Mrs. Smith

by Tammy A

Mr & Mrs Smith was fun to watch. And as much fun as it was, I observed a lesson to be learnt here on communication.

Both of them got married out of hot passion & then later the marriage waned because both had to keep a big part of their lives a secret. They ended up hating each other. What turned the marriage around was when eventually they found out about each other's secret identities as assasins & when everything was out in the open, their love for each other was rekindled & held hands to fight together.

That's the kind of marriage I hope to have.

To digress a little, I just don't believe in the damsel in distress kind of relationship. Just like in Shrek, the heroine has enough chops to protect herself when her man is not there. And when they're together, they fight together as a team.

That, to me, is kinda cool. Not in the physical sense of course, but realistically working together & fighting against all odds in your relationship is.

Coming back, I feel the problem with many marriages & why they never last is because they failed to communicate. More often than not, a couple 'falls in love' without knowing how to handle when they are 'out of love'. With technology becoming more & more advanced, quality communication becomes stunted & paralyses a marriage.

Mr & Mrs Smith is a dramatized & exaggerated couple yet they are also real in many ways. It is not uncommon to find 'hot' (read: good looking) couples like them who fall madly in love with each other, although uncommon that 2 opposing assasins who would. Because they are unable to reveal many things about themselves, the lack of communication led them to drift apart & soon the relationship became stale.

Only when they had to kill each other that they started getting acquainted with each other all over again. That brought on a new wave of passion which is also not unrealistic. I believe we could take a leaf or 2 out of this movie.

Many times, couples go on to be busy with their own life as if living a secret identity only to have resentment brooding in their hearts. What's sad is, most couples never go on to finding their back their passion.

But please, don't take it to mean that I'm suggesting you attempt to kill off your spouse if you so happen to be unhappy in your marriage...

This movie, although is a movie, has pointed out a very important fact in a relationship & is a good reminder for all of us.

Later.
