You should put the same amount of time into picking out a mattress as a King or Queen would put into picking out a throne. Your mattress reflects you and can determine your health and your attitude depending on how well it delivers a good night's sleep.
When shopping for a large ticket item (anything over $100), leave your money at home. This will help you look at different choices for mattresses and have time to think about each offering without making a quick decision and then being stuck with your purchase for many years. I like to wait 24 hours after seeing something I like to evaluate if my draw to an item is emotional or if I truly have some good logical reasons for the purchase.
1. Take a look at your present mattress. Make a list of the things you like and do not like about the mattress, box spring, and frame. Make a note of the manufacturer, how long you have owned the mattress, and evaluate if you think it has worn well. If you are very pleased with your present mattress and it has served you well for at least five years, then consider revisiting what is on the market that is made by that manufacturer. If your mattress is still under warranty and you are looking for a new mattress because it is very worn, contact the manufacturer first to see if you can have them stand behind their guarantee. You may have to pay a prorated amount but it may still be more economical than totally replacing what you have.
2. If you are not so pleased with your present mattress, then begin to look over the list of items you did not like about your present mattress. This may give you a better view of what you might really need.
3. Look at your budget. You will have to evaluate what is the top amount you will pay. Mattresses with all the extras look really good when you get to the store; but remember that if it goes way over your budget, no matter how comfortable it is, it may cause you to lose sleep if you are struggling to pay for it.
4. Take a look at the many types of mattresses that are on the market today. Ask a lot of questions. Check out consumer reports and search the internet for information on different types of mattresses and their manufacturers. I like to look for things like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Talk to friends. If you travel and really like a bed in your hotel room, ask the innkeeper about the mattress. Essentially, you need to do your homework.
5. Consider your size and weight. If you have a partner also consider their needs. Think about whether
