In the 1,900 or so years since the last book of the Bible was finished, science has come a tremendous way in debunking much of the obvious myths and fairy-tales in its midst. It is no surprise that the bible contains such stark untruths; humanity was extremely uneducated and knowledge was rare. For the time period in which it was written, the Bible was a way for future generations to live by what was thought to be God's ultimate word of right and truth. But as eons and generations go by, people evolve - whether you want to believe it or not - and antiquated myths and beliefs go out the window and in their place are hard scientific facts.

First off, it doesn't take a genius to debunk certain ridiculousness right off the bat, like Moses parting the red sea, and an ark being able to house two of every animal. Other silly tall-tales include, Jonah living in the belly of a whale, and Jesus banishing evil spirits into a flock of pigs.

Science takes care of other areas. In 80 A.D., the time the last book of the Bible (Revelation) was estimated to have been penned, no one knew about the millions of species of animals, nor the existence and extinction of dinosaurs, nor the presence of a heliocentric universe. Humans could not see outside their own town let alone into outer space.

In addition to the obvious fantasy and naive myths, the sheer holes and contradictions in the Bible are staggering. One needs only to Google the words "bible contradictions" to be shown endless websites featuring list after list of the inconsistencies held so true by so many believers. The holes in the Bible are immense: after God created Adam and Eve, and they had children, how did the world become full of people? The Bible skips that part, leaving skeptics like me with many unanswered questions.

The problem with the Bible is that it is not edited or updated to corroborate with modern times. As humanity evolves, the Bible stays the same, and so does religion, more or less. I would advise everyone to read the Bible, despite its staggering holes and untruths, simply because it is a classic depiction of an ancient struggle, and a profoundly interesting and insightful book. However, it should NOT be taken literally. Regardless of what your religion is, you should always think for yourself, and not dictate your life by any text, especially one that has not evolved over almost two-thousand years.
