Collecting seashells

Whether on a vacation or on a mission, seashell collectors comb the beaches in search for treasure. Some begin with just a little shell and end up with a whole collection that has been carefully cataloged. With the proper preparation and knowledge, you too can join their ranks and have an adventure of your own.

FIVE TIPS FOR COLLECTING SEASHELLS:

#1. Always prepare yourself for the excursion.

Research books and websites for information on where to find shells and what to look for. Familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations in the area you will be searching for shells. There are places that do not allow you to pick up shells at all and some prohibit the collecting of shells with live animals inside.

If you are planning on searching for your shells on the beach, prepare for the elements. Make sure you wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Bring a small shovel, as well as a pail or tote to carry any shells you may find. Bring water and a snack. Make sure you wear water- appropriate shoes to avoid stepping on jelly fish. Better safe than sorry!

#2. Know where and when to search for shells.

Choose to go beach combing during the off season, when the tourists are at home. If it is summer, go during the middle of the week. You will have a much higher chance of finding a good specimen. You can also go after a storm, when the shells are more likely to wash up on the shore.

Look online or in stores if you want to own a shell that seems impossible to find. This is a good option for collectors who live far away from the beach.

#3. Clean the shells you find.

Shells need to be cleaned when you get them home. You can boil them with bleach and water and let them soak overnight, or until the smell disappears. If there is anything stuck to the shell, use a toothbrush or other instrument to get it off. You can make your shells nice and shiny by applying mineral oil to them.

If you decided to collect a shell that contained an occupant, you may have a hard time getting it out. You can stick the shell in a freezer bag and freeze it. Defrost it later and pick the animal out. You can also boil the shell and remove any tissue. Make sure you use bleach as a last step.

#4. Research the shells.

Become an amateur conchologist (a person who studies shells) by researching your finds either online or in a book. Make sure your source has accurate descriptions and pictures. Look at online auction shops and retail shops to get an idea of how much your shell might sell for.

Begin a notebook or use index cards to write down any useful information about your shell, such as its name, size, condition and where you found it. Include its estimated value as well.

#5. Display your shells.

If you own valuable shells, you may want to keep them in a safe and special place, such as a display case. If you just want to enjoy the beauty of your shells, you can display them in vases, jars, or baskets. You can also make a variety of crafts with them.

Make animals or other figures by gluing shells together with a hot glue gun. Place shells around a mirror or picture frame to give your decor a breezy beach-like feel. Give your crafts as gifts to loved ones. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness!

Collecting seashells can be a serious endeavor or a playful romp on the beach. With a little forethought and a lot of adventure, you can find the treasures that your heart desire and end up with a collection to be admired for years to come.
