I was a twenty two year old black car saleswoman, ready for the hustle and bustle of big city life.
I drove up Buckner Boulevard eastward, and when I had gotten to the end of endless dealerships, I drove down Buckner Boulevard westward. Tired and weary, I stopped into a fully stocked yet run down looking car dealership. My feet sore, but with the last bit of energy that I could muster, I stepped out of my air conditioned car into the scorching Texas heat. My determination was dwindling, yet I walked inside the two desk office and asked for the manager.
A casually dressed red headed white man with freckles, wearing a white polo shirt, short pants, and flip flops was sitting at the desk to the right side of the room. He said, I'm the manager and the sales person here." I asked," sir, are you hiring? He paused for a second looked at me, and said, "I could use another person. It's just me here so I could use a little help with the leads on the phone. When can you start?" I answered with a smile on my face, "as soon as possible. I have moved here from Tennessee, and I need a job.
That day I filled out an application to my first job in Dallas, Texas. For the first few weeks things were normal. I had learned how to do tote the note deals, but I was still mostly answering the phones. From time to time, I would notice a look in the manager's face. He would walk the car lot with a seemingly non challant look on his face. Something was there I just could not put my finger on it.
I was doing well he said. He even told me how he would let me go to the auctions with him to learn how to bid on cars. That was fine with me. I wanted to learn as much as possible. After a while, he gave me free reign over things. Since I had experience at a larger dealership, he said I could use what I knew to for better things.
I was a young black woman full of brilliant ideas. There was something strange about the car lot. All The cars was turned away from the highway. Passersby could not see the car from the front. I approached him with the idea of turning the cars around to face the highway. He agreed. So I took time out the next workday and precisely turned every car around to face the highway. Walk in traffic increased when this was done.
But someone was not satisfied. About two weeks later, the cars were turned back around, against the highway. This was the second thing that occured that was weird.
One day while I was working, a gentleman pulled into the dealership driving a Lexus LS 400, silver.
