Planning for your vacation is more than finding an affordable ticket and the perfect hotel. Researching what to expect weather-wise before making definite plans will let you make the most of your experience. There is nothing more disappointing than booking a trip on a fabulous deal!' to a promised sunny and tropical place only to arrive in the midst of a monsoon-like season. Know before you go.
Year round temperatures in the Dominican Republic generally hover between 81 - 87 F throughout the island. Because of its close proximity to the equator, it has only two major seasons dry and wet. A popular tourist attraction, not surprisingly the Dominican Republic draws most of its visitors during the dry' season from December to April. Even though temperatures can soar up into the 90's the further along in the dry season one goes, cooling trade winds from the Northeast blow between November and February.
In the wet season (May through November) temperatures do not fluctuate very much, but be aware that the constant rainstorms will obviously increase the humidity of the island, creating a thick, tropical climate. Though some like it hot', most do not like it sticky as well. Because of this, rates are often lower for airfare and accommodations. However, remember: just because it's the rainy season, doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy the sun in between downpours. If you don't mind running between the raindrops, the Dominican Republic still offers many activities that can be enjoyed no matter what the season.
It is always quite warm on the coasts no matter the season. However, if you are looking for cooler, more temperate conditions one can travel inland. It is always several degrees cooler and can even be quiet chilly in the evenings or when cloudy.
Outdoor activities on the water such as windsurfing, scuba/snorkeling and boating (including deep sea fishing) are always available, but sunbathers may not enjoy it the rains as much, despite the heat. Hiking devotees will find dozens of national parks in the Dominican Republic that are accessible year round, both inland and on the coasts.
Finally: keep in mind that the Dominican Republic is on the Caribbean hurricane belt and the typical hurricane season is during the latter part of the wet season: June to November. The later months, September though November, have a higher likelihood of hurricanes and it is thought safest to avoid visiting the Dominican Republic during that time.
