Situated on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with its neighbor Haiti to the west, The Dominican Republic boasts plenty of sunshine and beautiful blue skies. Year-round temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and only slight variations in weather between summer and winter months are noticeable.
However, the Dominican Republic is home to diverse geography, from mountain peaks and pine forests, to arid desert and sandy beaches, and as a result, variable weather can occur within the semi-tropical climate.
Steady Temperatures Along the Coasts
In the winter or "cool season" from November to April, daytime temperatures in the coastal regions are in the low 80s, with cooler evenings in the uppers 60s thanks to relatively low humidity. During this time, the northern areas of the island tend to see the greatest amounts of rainfall.
In the summer, from May to October, the coastal and beach areas rise to the upper 80s during the day, while the high humidity can make it feel much hotter, and fall into the low 70s at night. The generally dryer southern areas experience the most rainfall during the summer.
The Dominican Republic's Caribbean locale means hurricanes, although not likely, are a possibility during the official season from June through November. Historically, most hurricane activity has taken place in August and September.
Seasonal differences are not always consistent, and torrential bursts of rain can occur throughout the country, at any time of year. Short-lived showers are usually followed by sunshine, but the rains have been known to linger for days at a time.
A Chilly Mountainous Interior
The Cordillera Central mountain region in the country's interior experiences significantly cooler temperatures, with average highs around 60 degrees Fahrenheit and an occasional frost on the mountain peaks. Daytime temperatures may climb into the 70s, but freezing temperatures can occur on cloudy days or at night, so dress appropriately for activities like mountain biking or guided hiking.
Ideal Times to Visit
Although mild temperatures and clear skies make The Dominican Republic a perfect destination at any time, the country does experience an ebb and flow of visitors. The winter tourist seasons lasts from December to February, bringing with it slightly higher prices and more crowds. Semana Santa, the week before Easter, is also popular for tourists, but prohibitions exist on water sports and other activities during this time. Things pick up again from July to August, the summer peak season.
February and November are ideal months to visit to avoid tourist throngs and enjoy great weather, the experience of Carnival and spectator sports like whale-watching. The nation's professional winter baseball league, which is active from October through January, features the area's top players. The annual Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, which takes place rain or shine in late October or early November, is not to be missed.
