What to look for in a law school

by Ren S.

If you're interested in applying to law school, you probably know that it is one of the most serious commitments-not to mention one of the biggest decisions-you could possibly make. From my personal experience, whether or not you like law school at all can be heavily influenced by choosing the right one to attend. Although I hated law school and am currently hoping to find employment outside of the legal field, almost all the reasons why I'd do it again relate to the school I attended (i.e. the people I met there, the area, the football team, the great administration, and just a general love and respect for the entire university). That said, here are some of the issues you should consider when choosing a law school that helped lead me to the right decision:

1) Location, Location, Location!
Location by itself should never make or break your decision. You will need to consider the other factors that I list, as well. However, in isolation, it can really be important to your happiness. I knew that two of the things I needed in a school were easy access to cities I like and relatively little difficulty traveling to see my family. In addition, my law school was in a college town as opposed to a major city, and that really appealed to me since I am not from the city. Finally, I wanted to be anywhere but the South, which is where I'm from. These might not be the issues that matter to you, but chances are good that several issues DO exist that should make location very important to you.

2) The Feel of the School
And you don't even have to visit in order to get a sense of whether or not it's a good fit or how you'd like the people, although visiting isn't a bad idea. However, I didn't visit-several things that happened as I was considering a visit made my decision increasingly easy. One of those things was the way I was treated by the schools between which I was making my decision. One of those two schools seemed to want me more than the other, and the people with whom I spoke at that school seemed a lot more genuine and helpful. There were other schools that never contacted me once I was accepted, except to inform me they wanted a seat deposit. The school I chose contacted me all the time with helpful information, students wondering if I had questions and the financial aid office to offer me a scholarship upon finding out that a similarly ranked school had also done so.

3) The Academics
If I had to say anything was lacking about my school, it was their course offerings. However,
