In these days of rising rents and real estate costs, it's wise to make every speck of space count. If you've a large, walk-in closet, dressing room, pantry or any alcove in your dwelling, don't ignore it. It has great use potential as anything from a small guest-room to a mini office space. There's even a certain charm to smaller spaces. All you need to do is bring it out of the closet (so to speak) with these handy decorating tips for small spaces.
1) Paint selection - pale colored walls and ceiling reflect light very well and give the illusion of extra space. The right color scheme will open up even the tiniest of rooms. Select light paint colors. White, neutrals and pale, cool tints look best. Avoid warm colors or any deep shades. For the smallest of rooms, my suggestion is white-on-white. High-gloss paint will emphasize any wall imperfections and will not work well in a small space. Smooth, matte walls are best.
2) Mirrors - mirrored walls can give the welcome illusion of a larger space and maximize your lighting. They are an excellent choice for accenting any small room, easy to install and compliment almost any decor. If you select mirrored tiles, do one whole wall with them from top to bottom so as not to break up your wall-space.
3) Lighting - a central source of overhead lighting will make your space look larger. Do not clutter your small room with various table lamps; one small, well-placed lamp to add mood or charm to the surroundings is all you'll need. If the room will be used as an office space, you'll want a sleek, adjustable desk lamp, and always, good, overhead lighting.
4) Floors - rugs do not work well in small rooms. Natural wood flooring, or light-colored tiles or linoleum are best. Keep to light, pale colors unless your floor has a natural wood finish. If the room is already carpeted, hopefully it is in a light, pale color.
5) Windows - avoid heavy curtains or any dark window treatment. Curtains should be a pale color. Light-colored mini blinds or a pale-colored window shade also work well. You may not even need curtains. A simple valence can add interest to your window without breaking up space. Prints or patterned window treatment can make your room look smaller. Stark simplicity is best.
6) Furniture - furnishings in a small room should be understated and of course, avoid anything big and bulky. Use pieces that have skinny legs - the eye passes through them easily, giving the impression of more space.
