It's a dirty job: Diaper changing 101

Any new parent will admit that bringing their baby home from hospital for the first time probably amounted to one of the most daunting tasks they have ever undertaken. It is a well known fact that babies do not come with a helpful, fully illustrated, instruction manual. There are many tasks that a new parent has to master, least of all that of diaper changing. Luckily, the art of diaper changing is one that can be quickly learned, and one will soon wonder what all the fuss was about! The task will be made much easier with the knowledge of a few simple tricks of the trade.

Firstly, and most importantly, it is vital to gather all the equipment needed for the task in hand. Having to leave a part naked, wriggling infant to fetch an all important tub of diaper cream or new pack of wipes may result in disaster. Ideally you want to dedicate a specific area in your home for the task of diaper changing. This may be a changing table, or mat on the floor; often a safer option when your baby becomes more mobile and would be at risk of falling. Keep all the equipment you may need in this place. Changing diapers in a consistent place also has the advantage of ensuring your baby grows accustomed to what is happening. They may be more willing to co-operate and lie still. An interesting toy used specifically for diaper changing or a fun overhead mobile may make the task easier.

The following is a list of items that you will need for diaper changing:

1. At least one, preferably two, clean diapers. You may opt for cloth or disposable diapers according to personal preference.

2. Cotton wool and a bowl of warm water, or wipes of your choice.

3. Scented bags to dispose of disposable diapers, or a diaper pail for cloth diapers.

4. Talcum powder, cornstarch or diaper cream, depending on need and personal preference.

5. Changing mat or towel, ideally with a warm surface.

6. Muslin square or a small towel.

When you come to change your baby, begin by lying them down on the changing towel or mat; a warm surface will be more comfortable for them to lie on than cold plastic. Remove any items of clothing necessary; I always remove socks to prevent a stray foot ending up in the dirty diaper!

Ensure your clean diaper is opened out and close to hand. Unfasten the dirty diaper and leave it in place under your baby. You can use an unsoiled part of the dirty diaper to wipe any waste from your baby's skin. If changing a baby girl it is really important to wipe from front to back to avoid contaminating your baby girl's vagina with faeces. This will lessen the risk of urinary tract infections.

Next, using cotton wool or wipes, carefully clean all the creased at the front. Then lift your baby's bottom, holding them by the legs, and clean behind. Remove the dirty diaper and ensure all areas of skin are spotlessly clean. Ensure little hands cannot reach the dirty diaper whilst you complete your task!

Quickly put the new clean diaper under your baby in case they decide to surprise you. When changing little boys it is also recommended to cover their penis with a wipe or cloth to prevent you getting sprayed with urine! I feel it is then really important to dry your baby's bottom before securing the clean diaper; use a small towel or muslin square dedicated for this purpose. This will help prevent diaper rash.

Finally, apply any talc or diaper cream needed and secure the diaper. Redress your baby. Ensure you dispose of the dirty diaper hygienically, or place in a diaper pail for washing. Wash and dry your hands.

Diaper changing may seem a dirty task for the beginner, but very soon you will be a pro and take all but the worst in your stride!
