Why wearing pajama pants in public is acceptable

I went to my local supermarket yesterday wearing my pajama pants and nobody noticed. I live in the U.K so I supposed that explained it. (Everyone was too polite to mention that I was in my nightwear)

As long as you don't walk around completely naked it is perfectly OK to wear what you like.

After all, what gives anyone else the right to tell you what you can wear and what you cannot wear? As long as you have not turned up somewhere where there is a strict dress code or you are not directly being the cause for someone else's embarrassment, then it is perfectly ok to wear your pyjama pants in public.

It is a free country and to be told that wearing pajamas in public is unacceptable and it is an infringement on your human rights.

Unfortunately the world around us is not always a pleasant one. There is violent crime, drug abuse, poverty and neglect... and we are talking about Western civilization. When we send our huge mountain of clothing aid to the more impoverished countries in the Third World, do we point at the television screen at a mal-nourished or poverty stricken child and exclaim that he is wearing pyjama pants in public?

Pajama pants are comfortable. They are easy to wear and to get dressed into, and great for lounging about in.

Incidentally, the reason I was wearing my night time pants in public was because I had a rotten cold and I felt like death warmed up. I needed to get a prescription, and I had no one who could pop over to the pharmacy for me.

Wearily, I had thrown a jumper over my very bright yellow and extremely cheerful Winnie-the-Pooh pajama's and had trudged around to the local store to see if I could make it, without dying on the way there.

I raised a smile from the chemist, but surprisingly I had no reaction from anyone else. At the time I didn't care less what I looked like because I felt so ill, but thinking back about my experience, I did smile a little myself. It is strange how something that would have raised a few eyebrows a few years ago is totally accepted nowadays.

I think that rings true for many other things too. I wonder if it means that society have become much more liberated and open minded to the needs of the individual, or whether it simply doesn't care. Each person too wrapped up in their own life to be wondering what the other person may be up to.

It would be interesting to see what would raise an eyebrow or two. Perhaps I shall wear the sheer baby doll and the pink fluffy slippers next time. That'll make the old guy next door choke on his early morning tea and biscuits!
