Born Blue
Jazz notes are born blue
from the pregnant tones of Coltrane's sax
the turgid tunes of Hawkins' horn and the
experienced rasp of Billie's song;
lift above the "F" line, as in
Every Good Boy Does Fine
to leap and swing with brine-bodies
and smoke-blue explosive reverberations
in every hue at home in mind grooves
settle on the skin, in the soul
of every Jazz lover, lovers of blue.
Wynton's Magic Hour, glow a little, shimmer
glimmer, flow around through midnight to the moon
expand our sublunary view and
shake it, mix it to American-new
like Wynton's brother Branford, heir of all that
smooth; notes rolling with Rollins drop, drop, drop
that dew, cuz I've got fervor
and fever too
for all this jazz, velvet and blue.
