Dog breed facts: Black Mouth Cur

Looking for an unusual breed of dog? Then the Black Mouth Cur may be one to consider. This is an active dog breed which may not be suitable for apartment life, but for someone living in the country who can provide a venue for exercise, the Black Mouth Cur can be an excellent family dog.

Cur has been a term associated with dogs for centuries. Cur is not a particular breed. Cur has in fact has multiple spellings including Cu, Kurre, and Curre.

Originally bred as a working dog, this is an intelligent dog that is not necessarily easy to train. It is known to be sensitive to rough treatment and any owner should avoid yelling or hitting. The Black Mouth Cur will respond best to gentle training.

The name of the dog comes in fact from the color of its mouth. There is no fur around the lips to hide the pigmentation, so the lips appear to be black.

Another descriptor of the Black Mouth Cur includes having a short coat that is not a constant shedding coat. It will blow out its coat once or twice a year only. So it requires minimal grooming. The preferred colors of Curs are yellow, reddish-yellow and black.

Males are 21-25 inches tall and weigh from 60-85 pounds while the females are 19-23 inches tall and weigh 50-75 pounds.

The Black Mouth Cur is bread to be successful at many jobs including hunting herding and guarding. They are loyal, loving and live to serve their master, but they are territorial. It is essential to socialize the puppy from very young on as well at provide obedience training opportunities. They are known to be very protective of their family, but do make good family pets. Usually they are a very even tempered breed.

They are a very clean animal that will not soil its space and so crate training is highly recommended. There are some lines that bark more than others. This may want to be discussed with the breeder before purchase.

This athletic dog also has an excellent nose for tracking and is popular for hunting purposes. They are also versatile enough to be excellent cattle dogs as well. For others this can be a great jogging companion because of its stamina.

Black Mouth Curs are popular dogs in the Southern area of the United States. They are popular there for coon and squirrel hunting.

This dog is recommended for families with the ability to provide exercise and a large yard for running. With the proper training and socialization, the Black Mouth Cur can be and excellent pet.
