Tips on collecting Civil War artifacts

Collecting Civil War Artifacts

Collecting civil war artifacts is an extremely rewarding hobby or pasttime. Depending on how serious you are in the pursuit of these artifacts, this can and will determine the value of your timeless treasures. In other words, some of these finds are extremely valuable, but one bit of advice for the novice or even the seasoned collector.

There are a tremendous amount of fakes or facsimilies in this market. Not to mention, there are literally thousands of sham artist's just waiting to seperate you from your hard earned cash. So, if you are trying to buy these civil war treasures, make sure that you deal with only reputable dealers or collectors. With the advent of the internet, it has made it much easier to verify who the reputable dealers and collectors are. This has been a huge help to the average collector!

For myself, I have three major hobbies. Antiqueing, Prospecting, and Civil War collecting.
Fortunately for me, prospecting has helped me a great deal in my other pasttime of collecting Civil War Relics. I use a metal detector a great deal in prospecting for gold, so it's given me a little leg up on the average joe.

As we all know, it's illegal to use metal detectors in any of our national or state parks. Take Gettysburg pennsylvania for example. You would not want to be caught using a metal detector in any civil war battlefield park. The fines alone are huge, and in some cases it can mean jail-time! So, be very careful when using a metal detector. Make sure you know where you are, at all times!

If you are the more adventerous type, like I am you can find your own places to search. Now that you have access to so much information through the internet, you can do your own research on small, obscure battles or skirmishes. A lot of times in your own part of the country, you can find places that have not been picked over a million times before you ever had a chance to try your luck. This is very advantageous for those of us who have big dreams and small pocketbooks.

The next really big tip for the avid collector is this. Research, Research, Research! I cannot stress this one piece of information enough. With the right kind of research, and a decent metal detector and of course, a great deal of leg work. Your chances of finding civil war artifacts, are greatly improved! I personally have found several buttons and minnie balls in what are now, just corn fields! Believe me, it's really worth the extra effort.

Now, last but certainly not least. When you make your mind-boggling finds of precious civil war artifacts, Ha! under no circumstances are you to try to clean them yourself. If you do decide to clean them up a little, don't use anything other than warm water and a very weak dish washing solution. Along with a very soft bristled tooth brush. It's best to have a true professional do the cleaning of your artifacts, but if you do decide to do a little cleaning on your own, be very, very gentle. It could mean the difference between several hundred to several thousand dollars! The choice is your's.

In conclusion of this article, the collecting of civil war artifacts is a lot of fun and very rewarding. Both in the mind, as well as in the wallet. Happy Hunting everyone!
