Moderation is the key when it comes to effective studying. A specific amount of time should be allocated toward certain subjects.
Time management is the process of managing your time wisely. Take note of how you use your time. Here are some tips that can help.
1) Set aside 30 minute time blocks to study 3 subjects everyday. Once your time is up for that subject, stop. Do not over do it. Go to the next subject.
I recommend using a daily planner to do this. If you are taking five subjects, take a half an hour out of every day to study each of them. Do not waste any time. Do not wait until the test to look over your notes. While waiting on line to order your food, quickly look over some notes.
2) Speed read through the chapter you need to look over. Use a pen to help you stay on track as you scan the sentences. This involves reading at a very fast pace by quickly glancing at words. The key is to pick up the important facts.
3) Use mnemonics to memorize important facts for the test. For example, singing a song with the facts in it can help you remember facts from the test. Make a picture pertaining to you that includes the names of those psychologists you need to remember. Make it fun and you won't feel overwhelmed.
4) Eat a well-balanced meal. Pile up on those veggies and fruits. You are going to need them if you want to remain alert. Do not study while you are hungry. This is not a good idea. Eat a light snack like some grapes or yogurt. Saltine crackers are also good.
5) Get a good night's sleep. Try to attain 6 to 8 hours of deep rest. If you have problems falling asleep, try writing a quick journal entry of everything on your mind. This will help you vent out all your worries. This will help you retain more information for the test.
6) Avoid studying in your bedroom. This is the place where you are supposed to rest at the end of the day. Go to a quiet and well-lit area. The library is a great place. It's quiet and you can go to those cubicles to focus on your work.
7) Do not watch television or listen to music while you look over your notes. You need peace of mind. What you watch or listen to do the day before may cloud your mind. "Desperate Housewives" is not going to help you on the test.
8) Get a study group together. Call up some of your classmates and get together with them in the library to do a 20 minute review. As a group you can bounce facts off each other. Try it. It's fun and memorable.
If you follow these tips you should be just fine.
