THE COMMUNION OF THE COFFEE CUP
I have a cupboard in my kitchen and in the cupboard there is a very special shelf. It is special because on that shelf sit my coffee cups. Cups that have come from all over the world and shared a sip or two of brew with many a friend. There is something about a shared cup of coffee that communicates a feeling of togetherness.
At night when I cam asleep I think that these cups talk to each other and share experiences. The coffee cup conversations mingle with the sounds of the night. They speak of far away places once visited, special celebrations and memories shared.
"Hi! I have a beautiful painting of Starry Night on my front. I was given to my owner because she paints and likes Van Gogh."
"I supposed that does make you special but I am covered all over with pansies and was given to her by her niece when she was in an alcohol rehab. center. Since then we have shared many cups of coffee instead of other liquid refreshment."
"Well, I have little pictures of Christmas scenes all over me. My mistress was feeling lonely in a new marriage and strange house and I brought back memories of Christmases past."
"There are two of us with Chicago and the skyline printed on our sides. Her youngest daughter sent them to her when she was living in Chicago. She missed her a lot but when she came for a visit they had matching cups."
"I'm short and made of heavy pottery but I have a pink and purple fuschia on my front. When she drinks from me she remembers the fuschia lined country roads in Ireland where she bought me."
"I like to be next to you because we really are neighbors as I am from Scotland. When she was there she chose me because I have pink cyclamen, inside and out, and they are her birth flower."
"Please don't think I am a snob because I am Royal Worcester. She found me in a little village when she was on a boat trip on the canals in England."
"Move over, I'm the newest member and what a surprise I was. She didn't know you could have a photo put on a coffee cup. Her granddaughter had them put the picture of her sitting on a ATV after a fun ride. Her helmet is way too big."
"I think perhaps I am her favorite because she uses me so often. Maybe that's because of what is printed on my side,"To a Special Mother, Mothers hold their children's hands a while but their hearts forever."
"Shhh, everyone. Its morning and she is coming to get one of us. Which one will she take? Maybe we will all be used today as friends might stop by for a shared cup of coffee and a drop or two of friendship"
Which one would you like?
