I have read all of the articles in this series concerning World of Warcraft thus far, and here's my two cents to go along with it.
I have played World of Warcraft since December 24th, 2004, as it was a Christmas present to myself -yes, the rest of my family got cool gifts this year, too, and when I found I had extra money, I bought something for me, which I don't do often. I have enjoyed this game since December of 2004, as well.
What has been said about level grinding -the definition of grinding being the harvesting of animals, monsters, plants, and minerals, raw materials, for various quest-giving NPCs in the game- is absolutely true, as that's all you can do to level your character so you can, indeed, perform MORE level grinding.
However, despite this aspect of the game, I find it to be an extraordinarily beautiful and complete representation of a world invented for video games -Warcraft I, II, and III- that emerged on the scene over a decade ago. The environments and weather effects are fantastic and, despite a few glitches periodically, the game is virtually flawless.
However, I can not say that I love the game, anymore; my relationship with it is akin to an old girlfriend I got tired of because of her constant nagging. All of that being said, I would offer -and have offered to Blizzard- the following improvements they could build into the game...
1) The quest system needs more substance. First, a quest is a long string of events which take place in the form of campaigns designed to solve one to three large world-affecting problems. Each of these large problems are further broken into smaller adventures designed to solve the "puzzle" pieces of the campaign, if you will. Finally, each adventure is made of a series of tasks or objectives to be completed by individuals or groups. Therefore, rename quests to tasks, and you'll have a winner.
I see all manner of gathering quests, and I see escort quests, and delivery quests, and "kill this bad guy" quests, and all in all a bunch of leveling quests to get characters up in levels so they can do more of those things listed here already. World of Warcraft has an absolutely fantastic history, and the character introductions when you make a brand new character in the game are amazing; however, anything having to do with the history of the world stops there. That is just not good enough.
My first character, a Night Elf Hunter, whom I worked to level 60 over the course of just over a year, I took there only because I wanted
