Vintage handkerchiefs are so charming and addicting to collect. They are delicate, beautiful, and have the ability to make you yearn for gentler days when women were feminine and men were gentlemen. They are crisp and fresh and not too expensive. They can be resold, made into crafts or given as gifts. Collecting vintage handkerchiefs is pure joy.
If you want to start a collection, but do not want to make a huge investment, then vintage handkerchiefs are perfect for you. The term "vintage" means that the hankie should be 50 to 100 years old. They can usually be found for anywhere from 25 cents to 3 dollars, though you may find higher prices.
FIVE TIPS FOR COLLECTING VINTAGE HANDKERCHIEFS:
#1. Look everywhere for handkerchiefs.
Antique stores are not the only place you can find vintage handkerchiefs. Yard sales and estate sales are also great places to look for collectable handkerchiefs. You should look at thrift stores and flea markets as well. Online auctions like eBay give you the option of comparing prices and styles. Make sure you look at the seller's feedback to see if you can trust them.
#2. Check handkerchiefs closely before you purchase them.
Before you purchase a vintage hankie, look for any flaws and ask questions. Check to see if they are linen, cotton, or wool. Can you tell if they are hand made or do they look factory made? Look for rips, holes, frayed edges, missing fringe, or old repairs. Fixing these problems are not worth the effort, so unless it appeals to you in some sentimental way, it is best to pass it up.
#3. Be familiar with the different types of handkerchiefs.
There are many different types of handkerchiefs, so start out collecting a few from each category and then decide what your favorite type is. Floral handkerchiefs are very popular, as are embroidered and holiday ones. Here are some different types of handkerchiefs:
* Floral
* Children's
* Souvenir
* Holiday
* Embroidered and Lace
* Designer
* Novelty and Themed
#4. Properly care for handkerchiefs.
Wash handkerchiefs in warm water and gentle detergent. A small amount of bleach can be used to brighten linens. If you would like to take a more natural approach, try hanging your handkerchiefs outside on the line. Sunlight acts as a natural brightener. To remove stains, place 2 ounces of Oxyclean in one gallon of hot water. Allow the material to soak overnight and rinse well.
Always store hankies flat. This will prevent obvious folding lines and the hankies will wear better with age. You can iron them when you are ready to use them or consider steaming to prevent damage from the iron.
#5. Be creative with your handkerchiefs.
* They make great gifts for a bride-to-be
* Sew some together to make an attractive wall hanging
* Put one or two under the glass on a coffee table
* Sew into quilts and throw pillows
* Include one in a get well or sympathy card
* Frame special ones
* Make a baby bonnet or blanket
Collecting handkerchiefs is a fun and rewarding hobby. You can showcase your treasures in many different ways or you can store them away for future generations. Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy your collection and have fun.
