Is there truth to old wives' tales about predicting the sex of an unborn baby?
In this day, and age, women can find out the sex of their baby by just going to the doctor's office and asking to have an ultrasound done, to find out what sex their child is going to be. It's that simple, one little picture, and you know if you are having a boy or a girl. Technology is a great invention when it comes to determining the sex of your baby, but the methods they used many years ago, is quite differently than we would ever think, and they do work.
Now if you were to go back about fifty or sixty years ago, or further, the doctor's could not determine the sex of the unborn child. There were a couple of ways in which to older generation figured out the sex of the children that other women carried. I know I did not need the doctor to tell me that my first born was going to be a boy, and my second was a girl. All I had to do was to go and visit my Grandmother.
She could stand in front of me, walk around me, and tell me that I was going to deliver a boy, when the time came for delivery. She could tell simply by the form of my body, and how high or low my belly was, while I was carrying my children. She said if the baby was low in the womb; it was a boy, if the woman carried high in the womb, and it was going to be a girl. The other factor that she used to determine the sex of a baby was by the width of the woman's hips. She said if the women's hips spread across the back, it was a boy, if the woman carried in the front, it was a girl. Some women shows their belly all in the front, you can hardly tell they are pregnant, when they have their backs to you. If they simply carry in front, the backside is the same as usual.
Another way they used many years ago was to have a needle threaded on a string, and hold it over the belly. If the needle went around in a circle, you were having a girl, if it swung back and forth, it was a boy. My Grandmother also told me that if I had morning sickness, I was having a girl. This method can also be done using the woman's wedding ring, looped into a hair of the woman. It works the same, if it moves in a circular motion, it is a girl, if it swings back and forth, and it's a boy.
When I was pregnant with my son, I was sick in the evening, and my grandmother told me to look forward to having a boy. With my daughter, I was so sick in the mornings, I wished some mornings that I never had to get out of bed, and face the day. Of course, I had to get up and take care of my son, which was my first born.
There are many other methods in which our older generation used to determine the sex of unborn children, but these are just a few of the methods I have seen my Grandmother use, way back when my children were on their way. Other people will have their own methods that they have seen the older generation of their families use. Even though the methods are easier to determine today, as they were years ago, but I can't help but wonder if our older generation new a lot more than we thought they did.
