Explaining different types of massage

Massage therapy can be advantageous to all individuals who wish to participate in the process. There are various types of massage techniques depending on individual needs. This treatment not only helps on a physical level, but can also help towards a healthy mind. The art of massaging was first introduced in Sweden. The techniques of massage can be performed by a massage therapist, or other health care provider. People choose massage therapy as a form of reaxation, or to aid with a variety of health conditions.

- Swedish Massage -
This is the most common type of massage in the United States. A massage therapist will knead the skin, and use long, thin strokes for a Swedish massage. Generally, oil will be used as a base for the massage. This type of massage usually starts at the back, working down to the lower legs. The person will then turn over and be massaged on the arms, legs, and abdomen.

- Hot Stone Massage -

Heated stones are placed on key points of the body. The massage therapist may put pressure on the stones. These stones are smooth, they are placed in water, then electronically heated. The heat relaxes the muscle in order for deeper pressure to be applied. The heat also improves circulation, and removes stress from the muscle.

- Thai Massage -

This type of massage is more rigirous than a standard massage. The therapist uses their hands, knees, legs, and feet to put the person in various yoga-like positions. People find this type of massage to be energizing and relaxing.

- Aromatherapy Massage -

Essential aromatherapy plant oils are added to the massage oil for this treatment. Some of the oils are designed to be calming, while others are to energize the individual. This type of massage is commomnly used to release stress.

- Deep Tissue Massage -

This is similar to a Swedish massage, but focuses more on relieving muscle tension. This massage will also help reduce inflamation and scar tissue. The massage therapist will attend to a deeper muscular relaxation with the techniques used for this massage.

When considering massage therapy, be sure to find a reputable massage therapist, or health physician. There are risks if a massage therapist is not properly trained for the job. It is not recommended that a person have massage treatments if they have deep vein thrombosis, a bleeding disorder, are on blood thinning drugs, have damaged blood vessels, or weakend bones. Also, if the person has damaged nerves, an infection, acute inflammation, a tumor, open wounds, or a fever, they should not have a massage performed. If in doubt as to whether this type of treatment is for you, consult your doctor, or health professional.
