No, you do not need to choose a religion to be spiritual. These days, if there isn't a denomination that follows people's particular beliefs, they make one up, build a church, and begin worship. This tells me that religion has gotten way out of hand.
All the way back through ancient times, different civilizations and cultures have held their own distinct beliefs and had their own Gods and Gods or Goddesses and ways of worship. But it wasn't enough that people already had something to believe in. Along came the "elite", who decided that it was best to form "organized religion" to control the masses. Religions and churches have been a huge money-making scheme for the rich and to exercise power over people. The bloodiest battles have been waged and most horrible atrocities have been committed in religion's name.

The hypocrisy and corruption that riddles religion boggles the mind. How could this be?
Oh. That's right. Religion and government were once one and the same.
There are also those individuals who call themselves "God fearing Christians", but again, they use that religion to threaten people, to belittle others, and to put themselves on pedestals above their neighbors. These are individuals who use religious status for their own gain. Often these are people who attend church "religiously", then go home and beat or molest their children, exercise cold revenge on those they believe have done them wrong, and otherwise harm their fellow man. And
