Do you need a religion to be spiritual?

No, you do not need to choose a religion to be spiritual. These days, if there isn't a denomination that follows people's particular beliefs, they make one up, build a church, and begin worship. This tells me that religion has gotten way out of hand.

All the way back through ancient times, different civilizations and cultures have held their own distinct beliefs and had their own Gods and Gods or Goddesses and ways of worship. But it wasn't enough that people already had something to believe in. Along came the "elite", who decided that it was best to form "organized religion" to control the masses. Religions and churches have been a huge money-making scheme for the rich and to exercise power over people. The bloodiest battles have been waged and most horrible atrocities have been committed in religion's name.

Religions divide people. People in one particular religion are of the opinion that their religion is best, their beliefs are right, and all those individuals who believe otherwise are to be pitied and converted. Throughout history, people have been forced, often through threat of torture and death, to change their religious beliefs and practices, to suit the "Big Guys"; whoever happened to be in power.

How can a group of people that has so much blood on their hands claim to have any kind of spirituality? An astounding number of religious followers fail miserably in practicing what they preach. Their areas of worship are greed, power, and control. They take everything they possibly can from their "flock". The leaders of many religions own mansions and drive cars that cost more than an average house, while their people die in the streets of hunger and disease. Churches are decorated in gold and red velvet, while the poor brainwashed people who buy into it can barely afford to clothe their children and put food on their tables. The hypocrisy and corruption that riddles religion boggles the mind. How could this be?

Oh. That's right. Religion and government were once one and the same.

There are also those individuals who call themselves "God fearing Christians", but again, they use that religion to threaten people, to belittle others, and to put themselves on pedestals above their neighbors. These are individuals who use religious status for their own gain. Often these are people who attend church "religiously", then go home and beat or molest their children, exercise cold revenge on those they believe have done them wrong, and otherwise harm their fellow man. And
