Poetry: War trauma

by Maria Ruggiero

Created on: July 26, 2008

Time heals all wounds
That's what they say
But not for my Dad's memories
They were like yesterday

He wouldn't talk of the war
Although I know he was proud
Of his service to our country
He didn't need to be loud

I heard the nightmares
From my bed sleeping sound
The screams filled my head
Back to the war he was bound

Back to the fight
And the lives that were paid
For the freedom I enjoy
And the life that I've made

Of course, I'd heard a few stories
When he felt he could share
But the pain in his eyes
Was almost too hard to bear

He kept most of his fight
Locked deep down inside
He served his country in spirit
Until the day that he died

I learned more after that
Much more than I knew
About the man as a soldier
That fought for the red, white & blue

The soldiers stood by his casket
And guarded it true
The pride on their faces
Showed easily through

They came up to us
With memories of old
And I grew prouder of Dad
With every story they told

I still have his medals
that he would never speak of
I think of him often
and send him my Love
