There isn't much more adorable than one of those close up pictures of a baby with a large gummy smile grinning madly and drooling at the camera. Great baby photos will remind you of those early days for years to come. With digital cameras and editing software it is easier than ever to get those perfect pictures of your little one. The foundation of great pictures is first being sure that you have a good camera.
Picking the right camera: Just before my son was born I purchased a medium sized, 8 megapixel camera. A megapixel is a measure of resolution. The basic rule is that the more megapixels the camera has the higher quality of resolution the camera will have. When choosing what is right for you the main consideration is whether or not you will be enlarging the photos. If you plan on taking portraits that you will be enlarging and framing you will need a camera that will take higher resolution photos (the more megapixels, the higher the resolution). While this is your first consideration, there are some other things you should think about when picking out a camera.
- Usability: How many functions will you really use? You can get a great camera with
plenty of functions or you can get that giant super-duper machine with more functions
than your car. Consider though how many you'll actually use (or have time to learn)
once your baby is born.
- Size: I have a friend who bought a giant, beautiful digital camera that takes incredible
pictures. The only problem is that she never carries it with her because it requires
its own carrying case. The thought of carrying a baby, a diaper bag, her own gear,
and another whole case makes it less than useful. I chose a medium sized camera. It
fits in my diaper bag so it goes everywhere but it's not so small that I lose track
of it.
- Durability: I went to an actual camera shop and told them I needed something durable
that I could keep in a diaper bag. They recommended a very strong, water resistant
model that has survived many drops to the floor.
When it comes to actually taking pictures of your adorable baby there are just a few helpful tips to keep in mind:
Zoom, zoom, zoom: Not only does using the zoom keep the camera from intrusive to your little one, but it will also give you those most adorable up close baby shots. Don't just zoom his or her tiny face - hands and little, wrinkled feet make great targets as well.
Keep the camera with you at all times. At home I have it on the kitchen counter in case I need to make a quick
