Steps to creating an online business

An online business is the most reasonable type of business to create in today's world. Not only can it be easy to create and maintain, but an online business also has an unlimited possibility for customers! Here are some basic steps to get started to create your online business.

1) PLANNING
There is no need to even get close to a computer for the first step. You need to decide what you're going to sell, or how your going to service your customers. You will then need to know the how, where, and when. Ask yourself a few of these questions:

What exactly am I selling?
Where am I going to sell this? (Ebay, Amazon, Your own website?)
Is my idea something people will want to buy?
When do I want my business up by?
Is this going to be in my home, my office, or another outside location?

2) SAVE MONEY
Make a budget plan and start saving. You'll need enough money for website creation, stock inventory, legal services, and advertising. Research all these and determine what you need to start-up cash. Try to find good deals and some free solutions to the above.

Write down estimated costs for EVERYTHING you can think of. Always plan on a bit more than what you exactly need, then save up. You will lose money at first because 1) You need initial startup money and 2) you'll probably lose money at first while your gaining your business savvy.

2) GET STOCKED UP
When I opened my first online business, I made one huge mistake. I created my website before I got my stock available, and so my customers were coming to my website and seeing a store with no products! My wholesale provider took way too long to deliver, but I should have planned ahead for something like that.

Look for good wholesale providers and have products in stock before you start business. If you craft, make enough and in enough variety so people will be interested in buying your products. If you have an online service like web development, create your portfolio or premade templates ahead of time.

4) START YOUR BUSINESS
Now you can finally set up your website, join Ebay, Amazon, or whatever your method. If on Ebay or Amazon, upload all your stock at once. If a visitor likes one of your items, they will click on your name an see what else you have to offer, and visitors like variety and quantity. I suggest getting an eBay store if using eBay so people can find your things better.

If you start a website, be sure it is completely functional and professional. Visitors will shy away if they see a 'cheap' looking website or faulty scripting. Hire help if needed. A website is your first impression for your business, and you need to make it last. Add your stock as soon as possible to your website.

When uploading stock, have detailed information and a lot of good pictures for each product. A visitor will feel more confident buying it.

5) ADVERTISE
Try advertising for free at first. Submit your website to Google and other search engines for free. You can do link exchanges with similar websites, or websites that share a certain theme. You can plug yourself on related message boards, or advertise on them for a minimal fee. List your website in related directories, and then in general directories.

Once you start making a decent profit, you may want to consider paid advertising, but don't grow so fast where you can't handle it.

Follow these simple steps to be prepared for the business world. Remember that you'll probably lose money at first because starting a business is a learning process. You can make a profit with time though, not to mention a good steady income to quit you day job. Stay focused on your goal, don't let this business be another failure statistic!
