If you are a student, there are likely some discounts for you right off the bat. Or, you may even have the option to fly as a "student stand by", which means, you basically show up and wait for an available seat. Great option if something comes up, but it's a risk you may not want to take. Remember, ALWAYS ask for discounts. You never know, you may one of the "chosen people".
WHERE TO STAY
Rome is a tourist attraction duh where tourists pay more for everything. Hotels are no exception. Factor the weak dollar into this equation, and, well, it can get ugly real quick. Thinking outside of the box, however, can not only open up more possibilities for you, but it can also save money.
Think convents. Yes, convents - equipped with Roman Catholic sisters and everything. Offering spacious, clean rooms at a fraction of the cost, many tourists find this to be a viable option. You are not required to be a Roman Catholic to stay in one, but you will be expected to pay cash and respect relatively early curfews. If you are a party animal, this is not for you. But if you are interested in seeing Rome during daylight hours and conserving money, it may work.
Bed & Breakfasts are rapidly becoming all the rage in Rome these days. In 2000, during the Roman Catholic's Jubilee, large numbers of pilgrims overwhelmed Rome's capacity to accommodate them. The Church asked that citizens offer their homes and viola a new industry was born. You can find listings by Googling "Bed and Breakfast Association of Rome".
If you really want to sleep cheap, many budget hotels are located in the area of the main train station, the Termini. Unfortunately, this is also a high-crime area. But, if you have a good set of street smarts and are not easily intimidated, it's an option.
Of course, you can just go ahead and spring for a decent hotel, especially, if you would rather cut expenses elsewhere to sleep more comfortably. Obviously, the choice is yours.
